Breaking Off Branches

from The Bonfire Monologues by Dan Geesin

/

lyrics

You know that you can share anything with me
You know that you can tell me what you want to be
You know that I will carry you as far as I can see
Right through the village tunnels up to the dying tree

You know that you can share anything with me
Looking through your window at us swinging from the tree
Breaking off branches from the dying tree
Then building a big fire as big as a city

You know that you can share anything with me
Do what you want, when you like then come in for your tea
Throw stones, get stoned, sit alone on a road
Think about the princes, and the kiss, and the toad

So you know now you can tell me anything you want
Tell me about your fires and setting fire to a dog
Watch it run yelping, running for it’s life
It was the dog of a neighbour who you really didn’t like

So this is our little village with children and little wives
With laddies stealing shot guns and children carrying knives
With shock and horror at the masacre on the green
By a man who was obsessed with everything, being clean

So you know that you can share anything with me
Do what you want, when you like then come in for your tea
Breaking off branches from the dying tree
Then build a big fire as big as a city
